Late Friday night, OPP released the names of the people involved in the incident in Elliot Lake on Thursday.

Police say that 64-year-old Wayne McLeod of Elliot Lake has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 67-year-old Diane McLeod. 

He will remain in custody until his next court appearance in Sault Ste. Marie on Nov. 29.

Due to a publication ban imposed by the court, no further details will be released.

Update #2 at Thursday, November 15 at 10:25 pm:

Police say an investigation revealed a person had barricaded themselves in a residence on Valley Crescent in Elliot Lake.

OPP established a safety perimeter in the area and was assisted by:

  • OPP canine unit
  • Emergency Response Team
  • Crisis Negotiators
  • a Critical Incident Commander
  • Tactics and Rescue Units
  • an unmanned aerial system
  • helicopter
  • Algoma Paramedic Services

Just after 11 a.m., a 64-year-old male exited the home and was arrested by police. He is being held in custody and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing in Blind River.

A 67-year-old woman was found deceased.

Further investigation is being conducted by members of the East Algoma OPP Crime Unit, North East Region Forensic Identification Services under the direction of Det. Ins. Rob Matthews of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Restrictions in the area allowed police to carry out their duties effectively and safely and have now been lifted.

Two canine teams assist officers in Elliot Lake

Police in Elliot Lake are requesting people to stay away from a neighbourhood Thursday afternoon.

They say it's an area around Valley Crescent where officers from the Ontario Provincial Police were called to deal with a disturbance at a residence just before 6 a.m.

They say the problem is ongoing, and while they feel there is no threat to public safety, officers want people to steer clear of the following areas:

  • Valley Crescent
  • Cedar Place
  • Balsam Place
  • Hemlock Place
