The Greater Sudbury Police are partnering up with Safe Ride Home Sudbury again this holiday season.
And as a way to kick off this year's launch, police held a ride check on Wednesday.
With the festive season is just around the corner, the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere campaign run by police is getting ready to begin.
Greater Sudbury Police say, last December the R.I.D.E program checked over 2,000 vehicles and charged six people with impaired driving.
“We are still going to make an attempt to stop more vehicles and see if those numbers are consistent or are we going to identify more impaired drivers that are out there this year? It's always a goal for us to identify less. The big concern with the enactment of the Cannabis Act this year, is there going to be an increase with impaired drivers this year." said GSPS sergeant Tim Burtt.
The R.I.D.E campaign begins November 28th, and runs through New Year’s.
These ride checks will be set up at various locations throughout the city and won’t just be on weekend nights.
"We went through a new pattern where we started going out on weekends during the day, during the week, during the afternoon periods. So, it's a random thing now. Don't expect to see us at the same time, same location all the time." said Burt.
Safe Ride Home Sudbury is hoping once again that people will choose to call the service for a ride, rather than risking driving impaired.
“We want to ensure that everyone is going to be safe over the holiday season so that family and friends arrive home safely.” said Leslie Green of Safe Ride Home Sudbury.
The Safe Ride Home Service is available as of Friday, November 16th and runs on weekends up to New Year’s Eve.
It is an initiative run by teams of volunteers that help people get home with their own vehicle.
People in Greater Sudbury can call 705-675-2255 on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 pm to 3 am. All services are confidential.
