A suspended driver who was on probation is accused of trying to harm a dog with a vehicle on Thessalon First Nation in northern Ontario.

The incident took place Jan. 3 at 11 p.m. on Oakridge Road in the community. Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call about "an individual attempting to run over a dog with a vehicle," police said in a news release Thursday.

"The driver fled the scene before officers arrived."

Police spotted the man around 2 p.m. Jan. 8 leaving a building on Main Street in the Town of Thessalon.

"Upon noticing the police, the accused fled on foot," police said.

"With the assistance of the public, the OPP were able to locate the individual on Water Street, resulting in an arrest."

The 30-year-old has been charged with threatening to hurt or injure an animal, three counts of driving while prohibited, five counts of failing to comply with a release order, violating a probation order and two counts of driving while suspended.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake at a later date.
