There was a violent crime in Sault Ste. Marie that left one person dead earlier this week.

Officers were called out to the Chartwell Drive area Monday and as a result of the investigation, 22-year-old Mathew L'heureux was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Court documents show that L'Heureux was no stranger to police.

He was out on bail on numerous charges from back in August, including assault with a weapon, robbery, forcible confinement and drug charges.

Police would not comment on his past record.Police say the victim and the accused were known to each other and the incident was not a random act. They do not believe there is any further threat to public safety.

The accused appeared in bail court Tuesday and remains in custody.

At the request of the victim’s family, the name of the deceased will not be released.

Police say they cannot give any information about the identity of the victim or how the death took place.

This is the city's second murder this year.
