Ontario Provincial Police in Kirkland Lake say a man is facing charges after an officer was allegedly almost run over by the suspect on a snowmobile.

Police say on January 26, officers were conducting a traffic stop in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

Constable Adam Gauthier is a community safety officer with the OPP.

"The MSV (motorized snow vehicle) accelerated directly towards the officer who was standing outside of the cruiser. The officer had to jump out of the way in order to avoid being hit. The MSV then fled the area." said Gauthier.

As a result, a 26-year-old local man has been charged with assault of a peace officer with a weapon and dangerous operation.

Police say the accused is scheduled to appear in court March 7.

Adam Estabrooks is the acting detachment commander for Kirkland Lake OPP.

"The operation of any motor vehicle or motorized snow vehicle is a privilege, not a right, in the province of Ontario and those who choose not to operate their vehicles in an appropriate fashion, will be held to account for their actions. The investigative excellence and charges levied in this investigation should serve as a reminder to MSV operators that they need to ride safely and comply with all of the rules of the road." said Estabrooks.
