(CITY OF TEMISKAMING SHORES, ON) - The Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been advised that the City of Temiskaming Shores has declared a state of emergency due to the rising water levels and ice building up on shore.

City officials say that due to the current water levels of Lake Temiskaming and prevailing winds, big chunks of ice are moving onto walkways along the shoreline.

By declaring a state of emergency, the city will be able to take necessary measures to protect critical infrastructure and access provincial funding.

It is anticipated that water levels in the lake will continue to rise and may result in additional closures of public facilities and roadways. Water levels are expected to rise in Lake Temiskaming by half a meter over the next three days according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The area near the lake on Fleming Drive has been closed down, and barricades are in place. The STATO trail, boardwalk, and municipal marinas have also been closed to the public.

Temiskaming OPP urge the public to remain away from the area and any closed roads.

Some members of the public are breaching the barricades and attempting to take pictures of the water and ice buildup. Police are advising against this behavious as they want to ensure that everyone is safe.

Businesses and residents, especially in low-lying areas and along shorelines, are encouraged to monitor the conditions and prepare accordingly.

Shorelines and banks by rivers and creeks are very slippery and unstable at this time and could pose a serious hazard.

The City of Temiskaming Shores will focus efforts and resources to the protection of municipal systems, especially those related to the sanitary sewer collection.

Roads have been closed in New Liskeard.

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST NIPISSING, ON) -
