On April 26, 2019, the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority issued a Flood Warning for the Mattagami River, which remains in effect and has been extended until Tuesday, May 14, 2019.
A Flood Warning message serves as notification to the general public that flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses.
Flooding is occurring in low lying areas along the Mattagami River and water levels in the area may continue to rise in response to warmer weather and associated snow melt, along with recent precipitation. Residents in flood prone areas near the Mattagami River should anticipate further water level increases over the next few days. The exact extent of the flooding is difficult to predict at this time and will depend on the weather. The Flood Advisory Committee continues to meet on a regular basis to review watershed conditions and forecasts.
Residents are reminded to remove unsecured material and equipment from shoreline areas and be prepared with a household emergency plan should a flood emergency be declared. Parents are again asked to let their children know about the dangers of playing in and around lakes, rivers, streams and flooded areas.
Currently, the Municipality has sand and sand bags available in the following areas:
• Mountjoy Arena, Timmins
• Confederation Sports Centre, Timmins
The previously issued Flood Warning for the Porcupine River and Porcupine Lake has been downgraded to a Flood Watch.
Water levels in Porcupine are gradually decreasing; however, conditions can change quickly if there is heavy precipitation. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring conditions until the spring melt is complete.
Further updates will be issued in the coming days as conditions change. For more information, contact the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority at 705-360-2660.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) May 14, 2019.
