A member of the family in the northern Ontario community of Thessalon is charged with a vicious assault and forcibly confining their parent.

Ontario Provincial Police said they were contacted around 2:45 p.m. Dec. 20 regarding a family dispute on Dawson Street in the community.

"The investigation revealed that an adult sibling had elbowed their parent in the face, then proceeded to headbutt them while restraining the parent in a chair for an extended period," police said in a news release Monday.

"The sibling also prevented the parent from leaving a bunkhouse on the property and pocketed their cellphone."

A 30-year-old from Brantford, Ont., was charged with assault, forcible confinement, possession of narcotics, violating probation and mischief under $5,000.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Monday and was remanded into custody.
