An apparent attempt to steal a vehicle in Thunder Bay, Ont., failed when the impaired driver fell asleep in a parking lot.

The incident began Sunday when Ontario Provincial Police were told a vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot of a dining establishment in the city.

"The vehicle was located in the parking lot of the same establishment with the driver asleep behind the wheel," police said in a news release Monday.

"The vehicle was deemed not to be stolen."

The sleeping suspect, a local woman, 56, was charged with impaired driving.

"The OPP wants to remind everyone to drive safe and sober," police said.

"Winter driving can be especially hazardous. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays."
