Two Sudbury men charged with hate-motivated crimes after pair injured downtown
Two 20-year-old men from Greater Sudbury are facing charges following what Greater Sudbury police are referring to as a ‘hate-motivated assault’ on Cedar Street at 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 15.
Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) said that the two male suspects assaulted two other men in an “unprovoked attack.”
During the assault, police said that the suspects uttered racial slurs at the victims while one of them “removed a garment of religious significance” from one of the victims.
The victims sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident, according to police.
“Due to the hate-based nature of this incident, the matter was assigned to a Detective in the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigations Division who is specifically trained as a Hate-bias/Hate-motivated crime investigator,” reads the news release.

One of the 20-year-olds was arrested without incident on Dec. 19 and charged with two counts of assault, assault causing bodily harm and robbery.
The second 20-year-old Greater Sudbury man was also arrested without incident on Dec. 21 and charged with assault.
Both accused were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 22 to answer the charges.
“Their names cannot be released as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process,” said police.
