The police presence was heavy on Monday as officers responded to a volatile situation on Wilma Street.
"(When) officers attended the scene there were two people in the apartment," said Staff Sergeant Marc Brunette, Greater Sudbury Police Service.
"They successfully managed to get one person out. By this time we began negotiations with a man who barricaded himself in the upstairs apartment."
The police operation drew a large crowd. One bystander told CTV a woman was rescued from the apartment using an aerial truck.
"She easily came down the ladder truck," said Robbie Lavoie.
"SWAT had fired it seemed on shot into the house. It looked like it was a bean bag, to give her room to come down because he was throwing things at her as she was coming down and they shielded her and the firefighters that was controlling the ladder truck."
The man then started throwing items out windows at police and firefighters.
Officers shut down a section of Wilma Street as a public safety precaution.
Police said successful negotiations with the man eventually led to a peaceful surrender shortly after 2:30 p.m.
The man climbed out the window and peacefully surrendered.
"Our goal is resolve this without injury," said Brunette.
"(For) the man who is barricaded in or our officers as well."
Police confirm one of the responding officers was hurt at the apartment, but would not say how. Investigators said the man is facing several criminal charges.
