The past few days have been extremely difficult for Alex Martin.
His mother, Marilyn Monroe, was the 58-year-old woman who was killed in the Station Mall's parking lot on Saturday.
Monroe was hit by a car as she was leaving a store.
"The most difficult in the 29 years of my life,” said Martin.
“My mom means everything to me. She was my best friend. She was my mom. She was everything. Anytime I needed something she was there. It hurts.”
Martin said his mom always had a smile on her face and she was eager to help anyone in need.
He said those are the things he will remember.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help Martin during this difficult time and it's already raised more than $3,000.
"It's amazing seeing not only that people are contributing to the page, but people I have no idea who they are. (People) who my mother had no idea who they are, just general people from the community who were touched by my mom. It means a lot," he explained.
Monroe was leaving Walmart when she was hit by a vehicle driven by an elderly woman.
She had to be extricated from underneath the car, and she later died as a result of the injuries.
"The female driver of the motor vehicle was in a parking space at the Station Mall and as she went to exit the parking space she lost control of the vehicle which in turn moved forward towards the entrance to the Walmart, striking a pedestrian," explained Sergeant Ray Magnan, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
City police have not released the name of the 84-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing.
