The membership goals of 2,400 needed to keep the Y running have been passed, and the organization's leadership continues to reach for more.
"We're sitting at about 2,600 active members right now -- we are hoping to get to over 3,000 members, into the new year," said Don Ferguson of the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA.
"Winter is traditionally a busy time, for the YMCA. We have great outdoor activities here in (the city) but you don't want to be outside all the time."
Ferguson said he is confident they'll surpass the 3,000 mark soon, with New Year's always a great time for memberships.
They also recently opened registration for winter programs that begin the week of Jan. 5.
"That includes things like indoor soccer, floor hockey, gymnastics, martial arts, and lots of other activities for anyone between the ages of six and 12," he said.
The Y is also adding new programs that officials foresee bringing in new clientele.

"Programs like Stay and Play, which is geared toward kids and caregivers and parents of children ages zero to five, that they can come in to the Y and just have some family time," Ferguson said.
"We're also introducing a program called Empower Her, which is a self-defence class for women ages 12 to 26."
Ferguson said slots for many of the YMCA's winter programs, such as swimming lessons, tend to go fast and suggests people register as soon as possible.
Most of the programs are 10 weeks. Sign-up can be done until all slots are filled. People can register in person at the Y, or visit its website.
