Northern Ont. man illegally killed three moose, one deer

A man from the northwestern Ontario community of Dinorwic has been found guilty of multiple hunting offences and fined $6,500, banned from hunting for five years and placed on probation for 18 months.

Richard Kanceruk pleaded guilty to illegally hunting multiple moose and a deer in the span of three years, the Ministry of Natural Resources said in a news release Friday.

"He was also convicted of shooting from a vehicle and failing to invalidate his deer tag," the release said.

The investigation began Oct. 20, 2023, when conservation officers received a tip about a discarded bull moose.

"An investigation in response to the tip confirmed Kanceruk had shot the abandoned bull moose," the MNR said.

"The investigation also determined that on Oct. 17, 2023, Kanceruk shot and killed a cow moose without a licence."

It was also revealed that he shot a deer with a high-powered rifle while standing on the running boards of his pickup truck on Oct. 16, 2023, failing to invalidate his deer tag.

"In further examining the evidence, conservation officers determined he also illegally hunted a bull moose in the fall of 2021 and 2022 without a licence," the release said.

Justice of the Peace Tanya Moss heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden on Nov. 5.
