One person is in hospital in Sault Ste. Marie after a brutal attack by a stranger wielding a metal baseball bat.

An 18-year-old has been charged with aggravated assault in the case, which took place sometime Sunday evening, Sault police said.

“Around 7:30 p.m., officers patrolling Cathcart Street saw an injured person on the road,” police said in a news release Monday.

“An ambulance was called, and the victim was taken to hospital with serious physical injuries.”

An investigation revealed that the accused, who didn’t know the victim, “repeatedly struck them with a metal bat in the torso and head in the 100 block of Cathcart Street,” police said.

“Shortly after midnight on June 24, officers attended an unrelated call for service where they located, and arrested, the accused.”

Charges include aggravated assault and failing to comply with a probation order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
