Sault police say impaired driver blew through a red light, rammed into transport

A 47-year-old has been charged with impaired driving and drug possession following a collision in Sault Ste. Marie the morning of Sept. 27.

A 911 call at 11 a.m. reported that a car and transport truck had collided at the intersection of Black Road and Second Line East.

"Officers were dispatched to the scene," Sault police said in a news release earlier this week.

"Upon officers’ arrival, the accused was in the driver’s seat of the car, which sustained significant damage."

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was later placed under arrest after being examined.

"An investigation revealed the accused was driving the car at a high rate of speed when they drove through a red light and struck the transport truck," police said.

"The driver of the transport truck did not sustain physical injuries. The transport truck sustained moderate damage. A search of the accused located approximately 14 grams of suspected cocaine."

Charges include impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, drug possession, failing to stop for a red light, driving without a permit and without insurance.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 21.
