Sudbury police are investigating a garage fire that happened in the city’s West End on Wednesday, February 13.

Emergency crews were called to a fire in a detached garage on Huron Street just before 11 am on Wednesday.

After extinguishing the flames, firefighters contacted police after finding suspicious items inside the garage, including cannabis and cooking equipment.

A 46-year-old man involved in the incident was sent to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries and later airlifted to Toronto, where he remains in critical condition.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the cause of the fire, while Greater Sudbury Police Service’s criminal investigations division investigates a suspected cannabis resin lab.

Ontario Provincial Police teams have also been called in to support the efforts.

Police say that chemicals, such as butane, used for making cannabis resin, may still be in the garage.

GSPS officers will remain on the scene until the property is cleared, but say there is no immediate threat to the public.

They do ask the community to avoid the area while officers are on scene.
