SUDBURY -- The man accused of stabbing Laurentian University music student Renee Sweeney to death in Sudbury in 1998, Robert Steven Wright, is making a second bid to be released on bail.
Wright, who was arrested by the Greater Sudbury Police Service in December 2018, was 18-years-old and a student at Lockerby Composite School at the time of the murder.
Originally charged with first-degree murder in the case, the charge was downgraded to second-degree murder last August. The Ministry of the Attorney General said as part of the change, the case will proceed directly to trial rather than having a preliminary inquiry to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial. No trial date has been set yet.
Now, Wright's lawyer, Berk Keaney, has confirmed that a bail review hearing has been scheduled for May 4 and 5.
It's not his first attempt at getting bail; a previous request was denied in March 2019.
It's unclear in this new era of COVID-19 on how the bail review hearing will happen and whether or not it will have to be over teleconference.
A change of venue hearing is scheduled for the following week after the bail review.
None of the allegations has been proven in court.
