Robert Steven Wright child pornography charge
More legal trouble for a 39-year-old man charged in the Renee Sweeney murder case from 20 years ago.
Robert Steven Wright is facing a new charge, possession of child pornography.
He appeared in bail court Friday to answer to the new charge and remains in police custody.
He is also charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Renee Sweeney in January 1998.
Another bail hearing is scheduled to get underway next week involving both charges.
On Friday, February 15 Wright's lawyers, Berk Keaney and Michael Venturi, released a statement regarding the new charge:
"This is clearly pure optics.
On the day of his arrest, December 11th, 2018, the police searched Mr. Wright's residence and did not find any relevant image or video. This charge is based on a single typed document.
Police have decided to lay this charge on the eve of his bail hearing.
We have no doubt that htis charge will ultimately be withdrawn."
