SUDBURY -- Environment Canada has issued winter weather travel advisories for several communities in northern Ontario for Wednesday and Thursday.

Isolated snow squalls are expected Wednesday afternoon through the evening before moving out of the region to the south.

Total snowfall of five to 10 cm is expected through Thursday morning in the following areas:

  • Espanola – Killarney
  • Greater Sudbury
  • North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa
  • Wawa – Pukaskwa Park
  • West Nipissing – French River

With Highways 17, 64, and 69 expected to be affected.

Heavy snow can cause reduced visibility, as well as falling temperatures can cause roads to become icy or slippery. Travellers are advised to be prepared for hazardous road conditions.

Environment Canada says this weather system is being caused by cold, westerly airflow over the relatively warm waters of Georgian Bay.

Snow squalls and an accumulation of 10 to 20 cm is expected to continue into this evening:

  • Agawa – Lake Superior Park
  • Searchmont – Montreal River Harbour – Batchawana Bay
