Provincial Police in Temiskaming have arrested and charged two men from Timmins in connection with an opioid-related death that happened in a town south of Temiskaming Shores.

Police were called to a sudden death on Empire Street in Latchford on November 30, 2018 and began an investigation.

Earlier this month, police arrested and charged a 30-year-old man for trafficking opioids in connection to the case.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in a Haileybury court on June 4.

Now, a 21-year-old man has also been arrested and charged for trafficking opioids, but police have also laid charges of manslaughter, death by criminal negligence, and escaping lawful custody.

Laura Houliston is a detective inspector for the OPP Criminal Investigations Branch.

“Trafficking in opioids is a serious offence. Dealers are knowingly distributing products that cause harm and/or death. The OPP will continue to investigate opioid related deaths and is focused on apprehending those responsible." said Houliston.

The accused is being held pending bail and is scheduled to appear in court in Haileybury on May 29.

"Opioids such as fentanyl are odorless and can be mixed with any drug; even a small amount can be lethal, putting the public and the police at risk. The Temiskaming OPP is continuing to work with community partners to strategically and collaboratively address the opioid crisis at the local and provincial levels." said Inspector Joel Breault, detachment commander of Temiskaming OPP.
