A 30-year-old woman is in hospital in Sudbury after she was stabbed multiple times early Friday morning in Chelmsford.

Police were dispatched at 7:30 a.m. to a residence on Errington Avenue to respond to a weapons complaint.

"It was reported that an individual had been stabbed and required urgent medical attention," Greater Sudbury police said in a news release Friday.

"Patrol officers arrived at the scene within one minute of receiving the call and found a 30-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. She was transported to the hospital by Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services for treatment of her serious injuries."

A 33-year-old woman located at the scene was also taken to hospital for minor injuries. Police believe she is responsible for stabbing the victim.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the stabbing resulted from an altercation between the two women," police said.

"Police are still on the scene and members of the community are asked to avoid the area as investigative efforts continue."

It's believed this was an isolated incident between two people who know each other and there is no threat to the public. It's being investigated by detectives in the criminal investigations division.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477.
