Cambrian College is getting $2.5 million from Ottawa to buy some state-of- the-art equipment for the school's Applied Research department.

Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre says the investment will make Cambrian more competitive and will allow local businesses, through the college, access to specialized equipment they would not otherwise have.

"A lot of the times they have to go down south to commercialize this, or to test it before they can commercialize their equipment. So, this investment of $2.5 million, this is actually helping students, Cambrian College, as well as private businesses in the area to scale up. And we need that because those are great jobs for northern Ontario." said Lefebvre.

Ottawa is providing $180,000 to re-map the Junction Creek watershed, a major waterway in Sudbury.

It's designed to help protect the area from future flooding caused by changes to the environment.

"It has happened in the past and we know with climate change, this is a serious problem that we have. So we want to be proactive. We want to see how we can mitigate and eventually negate any effect that flooding may have in the area. But to do that, we need the data." said Lefebvre.

The funding for Cambrian College is from FedNor, while the watershed money comes from the Ministry of Public Safety.
