The run of warm weather this fall is coming to an end, with snow and freezing rain moving into northeastern Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for Timmins, Cochrane, Agawa, Lake Superior Park, Iroquois Falls, Chapleau and Missinaibi Lake.

“A developing low pressure system continues to bring a large area of mixed precipitation to parts of northern Ontario,” the weather forecaster said in a statement.

Precipitation is expected to switch from a mix of freezing rain and ice pellets to flurries or showers by this afternoon, the statement said.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous,” the warning said.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Utility outages may occur.”

Environment Canada has also issued snowfall warnings for Kapuskasing, Hearst, Fraserdale, Pledger Lake, Smooth Rock Falls, with 5-10 cm forecast.

“A developing low pressure system will continue to bring significant snow to the area today,” Environment Canada said.

“Snow is likely to mix with ice pellets at times during this period. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”
