Sault motorist was driving 175 km/h on Hwy. 17, northern Ont. police say
A 20-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with stunt driving and is accused of exceeding the speed limit by 85 km/h.
In a social media post, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the incident took place on Jan. 8 on Highway 17 southwest of Sudbury.
"Manitoulin OPP stopped a vehicle that was travelling 175 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone on Highway 17," police said.
Additional penalties
In addition to the charges, the driver also received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved were impounded for 14 days at the owner’s expense.
Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. In Ontario, drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction.
The accused are scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.
