Both drivers were travelling at excessive speeds and were charged with stunt driving and speeding on Jan. 9.

“The first driver was a 36-year-old person, who was travelling 158 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone on Highway 69,” said police in a social media post.

“The second driver was a 43-year-old person, who was travelling 140 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Highway 144.”

Additional penalties

In addition to the charges both drivers also received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicles involved were impounded for 14 days at the owner’s expense.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. In Ontario, drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction.

Both accused are scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer the charges.

"The OPP would like to remind motorist(s), that stunt driving includes vehicles travelling over 150 km/h, not just 50 km/h over the speed limit," said police.

"Slow down (and) drive safe."
