SAULT STE. MARIE -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, a police watchdog agency, is investigating an incident involving the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service that sent a 29-year-old man to the local hospital with serious injuries Thursday morning.
The SIU says the man was arrested after an interaction with police and was then taken to hospital for treatment.
Officials say police first responded to the Sault Area Hospital around 1:45 a.m. April 23 to provide assistance. The police tried to arrest the man, but he was able to escape from them and drive away.
According to the SIU, the Sault police eventually found the man’s vehicle in the city on Korah Road. The police then reportedly entered an apartment building and found him.
That’s when the SIU says the interaction between the officer and suspect took place, prior to his arrest.
When asked if any weapons were used in the altercations SIU Communication Coordinator Monica Huron said: "determining what transpired during the interaction will be part of the SIU’s investigation."
When asked if the male suffered a gunshot wound, she said: "that’s not true."
The SIU is a provincial agency that probes occurrences involving police and death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
