School, daycare lockdown end in Kapuskasing, barricaded person taken into custody

 

A Kapuskasing school and childcare centre lockdown ended Monday afternoon. And by Monday evening, a barricaded person had been taken into custody.

 

The school board said on Facebook that parents could pick up their children beginning at 3 p.m. While the lockdown was over, students weren't allowed to leave on their own.

Const. Kyler Brouwer of the Ontario Provincial Police told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in a phone interview earlier Monday afternoon officers were dealing with a barricaded person on Algonquin Street.

A call was made to police around 10:45 a.m. and resulted in an individual barricading themselves inside a residence, Brouwer said.

Crisis negotiators and the emergency response unit was called to the scene.

There is no risk to the public, Brouwer said, but the road is closed. The person was arrrested sometime around 7 p.m.

The James Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police put out an advisory about a heavy police presence on Algonquin Street in the small northern Ontario town just before 11:30 a.m.

"Please avoid the area until further notice," the social media post said.

Minutes later, Conseil scolaire catholique des Grande Rivières posted on social media that no one is being allowed in or out of its local schools due to "a police situation outside the schools."

Monday is a professional development day for educators, so students are not in class, but staff are on site and the daycare is open.

Ecole catholique Jacques-Cartier is the school nearest to Algonquin Street in Kapuskasing.
