Save our Young Adults in the Sault saves Thanksgiving

Volunteers with addiction support group Save Our Young Adults (SOYA) walked back and forth between their depot and Grocer 4 Good, transporting hot food to hungry people waiting for their Thanksgiving meal.

SOYA has been serving Thanksgiving dinner for the last five years and they're keeping up the tradition – even they and other similar agencies and organizations struggle to keep their food bank shelves stocked.

"We have ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, turnips, cookies, chocolates, stuffing, juice, coffee, homemade buns, butter and service with a smile," said SOYA founder Connie Raynor-Elliott adding many local businesses and groups contributed to this year's meal, including Harvest Algoma, Grocer 4 Good, Metro, Water Tower Inn, and Mar Mac Lodge.

"We live in an amazing community," she said.

"Sault Ste. Marie, I've been here for 59 years, not aging myself, but they always come together and it's a family.”

Raynor-Elliott told CTV News that SOYA is 3,600 strong and keeps growing.

“Our city always comes forward," she said.

SOYA volunteers said the group served 286 meals on Sunday.
