SUDBURY -- Ontario Provincial Police were able to use a spike belt on Highway 17 to stop an impaired driver, who failed to stop for Sudbury officers.
The North Bay detachment of the OPP received a call from Greater Sudbury Police Service around 5:15 a.m. Sunday about a suspected drunk driver travelling east, police said in a news release.
An officer from the West Nipissing detachment located the vehicle and followed it toward North Bay while others set up spike belts on the highway in Nipissing First Nation.
The driver, a 28-year-old woman from Richmond Hill in southern Ontario, was arrested and charged with impaired driving – alcohol and drugs after being tested by a drug recognition expert.
She was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 29.
Her vehicle has been impounded for seven days and driver's license suspended for 90-days.
This incident marks the 48th person charged for impaired driving in the North Bay OPP detachment area this year. Police said a quarter of these involves drivers impaired by drugs.
"The OPP are reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 911 immediately," said police.
