NORTH BAY -- North Bay City Council will be voting on a motion to re-name the turf football field at the Steve Omischl Sports Field Complex, after Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea.

Should council approve it, the field would be re-named the "Mike O’Shea Powerade Field".

"It’s very long overdue. Mike’s been a big proponent of North Bay," said City Counc. Marcus Tignanelli,

"He’s super supportive and always comes home with the Grey Cup."

Born in North Bay, O’Shea coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a historic 2019 Grey Cup win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

It gave O’Shea his fifth CFL title, as he also won three as a player.

Tignanelli knows O’Shea personally and came up with the idea. He says he thought it would be a good way to honour his legacy.

"We live in a day and age when we try to inspire the youth. I spoke to Mike the other day and he’s extremely humbled," said Tignanelli.

O’Shea was indicted in the city’s sports hall of fame in 2013 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

"No one in this game deserves more recognition here than Mike O’Shea without a doubt," said Pete Handley, North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Secretary.

O’Shea played 16 seasons in the CFL for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts from 1993 to 2008.

A tough linebacker in his day,  O’Shea retired at second place in all-time CFL career tackles, and is one of only three players to record over 1,000 tackles.

"He would be the premier football graduate of the North bay System without any question," said Handley.

Tignanelli says it won’t cost the city a penny to name the field after the decorated football coach.

"It’s a humbling moment for everyone and impossible is nothing and you can come from North Bay and be extremely successful in professional sports."

Council is set to vote at their next Tuesday council meeting.
