Former Sudbury Star reporter Carol Mulligan is seeking to start a new career in politics.

Mulligan said she left the paper earlier this year in search of a new challenge and politics is it.

Mulligan announced Friday she is seeking the nomination for the Ontario NDP in Sudbury, ahead of the 2018 provincial election.

In a media release, the 64-year-old said years of reporting on the alternate level of care crisis, doctor shortages and long waits for medical care brought her face-to-face with hundreds of suffering, disaffected Sudburians.

“She is tenacious in championing the rights of those who otherwise might not have a voice,” said Brian MacLeod, former Sudbury Star editor.

“Her compassion and extraordinary resolve were the hallmarks of her career in journalism.”

“Carol is a person of the people, for the people, who over her career made it a point to cover stories having roots in injustice. Her dedication affected change and improved the quality of life in many areas for the citizens of Sudbury," said Brenda Tessaro, Sam Bruno PET Steering Committee spokeswoman.

A date for the nomination meeting has not been set at this point.
