Hwy 17 reopens between Wawa, Batchawana after fatal crash

Highway 17 was closed in both directions between Wawa and Batchawana Bay due to a fatal two-vehicle collision Thursday morning.

On March 28  shortly before 10:00 a.m., the Superior East Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a "serious two-vehicle collision" on Highway 17 near Rabbit Blanket Lake - about 30 kilometres south of Wawa, said the OPP in a news release.

"One person has been confirmed deceased as a result of the collision," said police.

The OPP initially confirmed the collision on ‘X,’ formerly Twitter, shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

“OPP advising Highway 17 between Wawa and Batchawana Bay closed due to serious motor vehicle collision,” said police, in the tweet.

“Likely closed for several hours.”

It re-opened almost 12 hours later, just after 8 p.m. that evening.

Police have not released any details about the caused the crash, the identity of the deceased or if any charges pending.

"The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available," said police.
