In Sault Ste. Marie, the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works host a free sports camp every Thursday evening to get kids active.
It's hosted in a subdivision that the group says has children that need to be able to get out and play and who don't always have the means to play sports.
It doesn't matter if these children are fast runners, slow runners or non-runners, the fact they are outside and being active makes them winners in the eyes or the camp leaders.
Riley Coulter is the coordinator of the "I Love to Move" program.
"Everyone is on their devices all the times now and it's good to get them moving." said Coulter.
A national study by the participation organization recently gave Canadian children a "D+" when it comes to the amount of activity they're getting.
he "I Love to Move" camp is hoping to change that grade, one child at a time.
Organizers made sure to make it free for everyone so that it would be fully accessible and would eliminate the barrier to some children participating.
"In the summer there are programs that are paid and some children don't get the opportunity to go to those, so we have the free one for anyone who wants to come." said Coulter.
Danielle Fata is a parent with kids in the program.
"It's a great drop-off for neighbourhood parents. I mean, you can see the row of houses here behind us, all the kids will probably come over once they see all the kids going to the program." said Fata.
While the parents get a two-hour break from their children, the little ones are burning off much needed energy in the evening.
CTV News asked some of the participants what they like about the camp:
"Because I love to the play the games and it's super fun."
"Soccer, basketball, Frisbee and fishy, fishy cross my ocean."
"I like doing games and crafts."
One child was asked if they would rather be playing inside on their Xbox 360 or outside playing games, the answer was “playing outside, playing games.”
When asked why, they replied “cause it's funner than sitting there and playing video games."
That's the response everyone at the "Social Justice for Good Works" is hoping to hear, kids wanting to be outside, getting active, and having fun.
The free evening camp wraps up at the end of the month.
