Impaired driving charges early Sunday morning in downtown Sudbury led police to a loaded handgun hidden inside the vehicle.

Police were conducting spot checks around 2:15 a.m. when they spotted a suspicious vehicle.

"The vehicle was seen speeding, braking suddenly, making unsafe turns and not coming to a full stop at a four-way stop intersection," police said in a news release Monday.

The vehicle was stopped at the corner of Paris and Van Horne streets and the driver failed a breathalyzer. The driver was arrested and the passengers were told to get out of the vehicle.

"The passengers became agitated when officers indicated they would be searching the vehicle and left the area while officers were conducting the search," police said.

"Officers located a loaded handgun and a loaded magazine in the vehicle. Officers quickly located the passengers on Elgin Street."

The 27-year-old driver has been charged with impaired driving and several weapons offences. The four passengers, ages 19, 20, 21 and 24, were also charged with weapons offences, including weapons possession.

All five attended weekend bail court on Sunday.
