Extreme cold and snow has made travelling on northern Ontario roads very hazardous at times this winter.
The Government of Canada these 10 tips can help prevent problems before they occur:
- Get your vehicle read for winter
- Install four matching winter tires
- Pack an emergency kit
- Learn and practice winter driving techniques before needing them
- Plan your trip, check road and weather conditions before heading out
- Remove ice and snow from your vehicle before each trip
- Give yourself extra time in bad weather
- Avoid using cruise control on slippery roads, in rain and snow
- Travel with a fully charged cell phone
- Slow down and wear your seatbelt
Ontario Provincial Police have offered some winter driving tips that will help keep you and others safe:
- Ensure your vehicle is clear of snow and ice for good visibility. If not done properly, you could face charges
- Let someone know when you are travelling, if you do not arrive at your destination, someone will know to look for you. This is especially important when heading out on snowmobiles.
- Be prepared. Bring extra warm clothing in case your vehicle breaks down.
- Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. If your vehicle gets stuck, keep a window slightly open if it is still running and clear the area around your exhaust pipe so fumes can escape.
- Pre-heat your vehicle
Police also say when you pre-heat your car; keep the doors locked, if possible, to deter thieves.
