Cambrian College is taking a step away from provincial varsity competition in women’s basketball.

In a media release, the college said it evaluates the merits and viability of each varsity program, and after much deliberation, a ‘difficult decision’ was made to suspend the women’s Golden Shield varsity basketball program.

The team struggled for the past two seasons; winning only two games in 2016-17.

Cambrian actively sought a new coach with appropriate credentials who would be a good fit for the College and the program, but that search was not successful.

The college has advised varsity staff and players, as well as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) of the decision.

Under the OCAA regulations, Cambrian will not be able to field a team for two seasons (until the 2019-20 season).

In April 2016, the school suspended the men's basketball program. It cannot field a team until the 2018-19 season.

For the upcoming season, Cambrian will compete in OCAA in six sports: men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross-country running, and men’s and women’s volleyball.
