Provincial police in the Timmins area are reminding people to drive according to the weather conditions, as OPP officers have responded to 16 collisions in just three days.

Officials say all them have occurred between January 14th and 16th on highways that the OPP patrol surrounding Timmins including Highways:   101, 655, and 11.

They say fortunately, there are no fatalities to report, but the high number of investigations is concerning.

“Mostly due to people driving beyond their capabilities or driving too fast for the road conditions.  And we’ve had a lot of winter in the last couple of days.  We’ve had a lot of snow; a lot of cold and people really have to adhere to their driving habits.  They have to slow down; they have to drive according to the conditions.  Weather and road conditions change really quickly in our area and we have to adapt to them.” said OPP Constable Michelle Simard.

The constable adds drivers need to  make sure windows are clear of ice and snow, leave extra space between vehicles, as stopping distances are more than double on snowy and icy roads; and keep fuel tanks at least half full, so you don’t run out if you’re stranded.
