Federal NDP leadership hopeful Guy Caron met with party members in Sudbury on Wednesday evening.
The Quebec MP and former economist is one of five candidates to enter the federal NDP leadership race.
Caron told CTV he aims to tackle economic inequality by proposing a basic income initiative.
The MP said his basic income proposal would help Canadians living below the income cut-off, and ensure their basic needs are covered.
“It's really to ensure that every single being in this country, which is still a wealthy country, we're talking about Canada here, could actually get to the level of poverty,” said Caron.
“When I'm seeing 55-year-old workers and I see them in my riding and like I see them in northern Ontario and they are laid off, and there are actually very limited ways that we can retrain them that we can reintegrate them into the economy, so we just put them on the sidelines and we forget about them. It should not be the case in such a country like Canada where we have the wealth and the ability of including everyone.”
Party members will begin voting for a new leader in October.
The field includes Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus, Churchill—Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton, New Westminster—Burnaby MP Peter Julian and former Canadian Forces Colonel Pat Stogran.
