A pair of 911 calls from concerned citizens led to two separate impaired driving charges in a single northern Ontario town within three hours last weekend.

On Dec. 21 at about midnight, members of the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) James Bay detachment responded to an emergency call about a suspected impaired driver on Government Road West in Kapuskasing, Ont.

“Officers located the subject vehicle and driver, and determined the driver had consumed alcohol,” said police in a news release.

“The driver was arrested and transported to the Kapuskasing detachment for further testing.”

Then at about 3 a.m., an officer from the same OPP detachment responded to another suspected impaired driving call on Maple Drive.

Police were again able to locate the vehicle involved and their investigation determined the driver had consumed alcohol. Officers transported the driver to the local detachment for further testing.

As a result of the two 911 calls and subsequent investigations, a 55-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, both from Kapuskasing, face two impaired driving charges each.

In addition to the charges, the two drivers also had their licenses suspended for 90 days and the vehicles involved were impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense.

“Celebrate the holidays responsibly,” said police.

“Plan ahead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.”

The OPP also reminded people to report incidents of suspected impaired driving.

“If you see a suspected impaired driver, call 911,” police said.
