Northern Ont. traffic stop leads to two arrests, $17K in drugs seized
While on general patrol members of the Almaguin Highlands detachment of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Highway 124 in Strong Township on Dec. 26 at about 1:30 a.m. following an alert from their vehicle’s automated licence plate reader.
“The (ALPR) alerted officers of a potential wanted party,” said police in a news release.
“All OPP patrol vehicles are equipped with ALPR technology.”
Provincial police advised that ALPR has proven to be an effective way to increase the efficiency of discovering and conducting investigations related to both traffic and criminal offences. The plate readers detect licence plates that are linked to occurrences such as wanted or missing persons, stolen vehicles, suspended/prohibited drivers and vehicles associated with serious occurrences.

A search of the vehicle uncovered quantities of suspected to be cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine along with drug paraphernalia and digital scales.
OPP estimated the street value of the drugs seized as $17,000.
As a result of the investigation, the 34-year-old driver from North Bay and his passenger a 42-year-old man also from North Bay were both face two drug possession charges and two drug trafficking charges. The driver was also charged with driving while under a suspension and the passenger was possession of property obtained by crime and failing to comply with a probation order.
Both accused were remanded into custody following a court appearance on Friday.
None of the accusations has been proven in court.
