In CTV’s final installment of candidate profiles ahead of the upcoming Sault Ste. Marie provincial by-election set for next week, we take a look at the Green Party candidate Kara Flannigan.

Three years ago, Flannigan decided to jump into politics with no experience.

She said she didn’t just want talk the talk regarding change; she also wanted to walk the walk.

"I joined the Green Party many years ago, because I was frustrated with politics,” said Flannigan.

“I was disappointed with the partisanship and the rhetoric and it just wasn't working for me."

Flannigan has run in the past two elections - federally and provincially - never getting more than one thousand votes.

However, she is not deterred and she hopes the third time will be a charm.

"It’s important to give people choices,” said Flannigan.

“This election, more than any other election, is a free choice for everybody to participate. You don't have to vote strategically. You can vote for how you believe. You can vote for a positive change. If you want to be a protestor, you can vote to send the very first Green Party MPP to Queens Park."

Flannigan moved to Sault Ste. Marie 30 years ago to work as a health inspector; a job she still holds.

But, she's willing to change careers, as she thinks it's time for a new voice to represent the Sault.

"We need to do something about power and the cost of electricity. I think bringing new ideas and fresh eyes to a problem eliminates the same-old same-old."

Flannigan said regardless what happens in the June 1st vote, she will be running in the provincial election next year.

She just hopes to be doing it with momentum, after a strong showing in this by-election.
