SUDBURY -- Walmart Canada released some news for shoppers in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday.

It is closing one of its two stores in the downtown area next month.

The company says 115 people work at the location at the Soo’s Station Mall.

Walmart Canada tells CTV News that the employees will be offered similar hours and positions at the other Walmart in the city.

But some local residents that CTV News spoke with about the store closing are disappointed:

“I think it's sad. I mean, they just closed Sears at the other end, now they're closing Walmart. I live on Cathcart and John and I've been coming here for like seven years, everyday almost, every second day. And now where am I going to go?”

“I had no idea it was closing, but that's pretty sad because that's the only place downtown we have to shop.”

“I guess I'll have to get the car and go up to Food Basics, No Frills, or something like that.”

Walmart says this closing is part of regular efficiency reviews and a look at concentration of stores. This as it announces an investment of over $200 million to refresh and refurbish 31 stores across the country over the next year.

Two stores in northern Ontario, Kenora and Timmins, are part of the renovation plans.

The downtown Walmart location is set to close at the end of June.
