Power restored to thousands after Hydro One outage Sunday
Power has been restored thousands of Hydro One customers in the Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin areas after a large outage Sunday.
Thousands of Hydro One customers in the Sudbury and Manitoulin area are without power Sunday afternoon, as of 3:30 p.m. (Red more than 5,000 customers affected.) The outage comes after storms brought lightning and high winds to the region. August 18, 2024. (Hydro One Outage Map)
Communities affected include Walden, Whitefish, Fairbanks, Narin Centre, McKerrow, Espanola, Webbwod, Massey, Spanish and Cutler along with most of Manitoulin Island.
"Our crews are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power as severe thunderstorms pass through," Hydro One said on social media at 11:19 a.m. Aug. 18.
Power was restored to most customers in Chelmsford, Dowling Onaping Falls, Windy Lake and Cartier by 2:30 p.m.
The utility company initially said online it hoped to restore power to most customers in the area by 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, but that was pushed back to 8 p.m. for thousands.
As of 3:30 p.m., the power provider reports of about 15,737 customers without power following storms that brought high winds and lightning strikes to the region.
Safety first
Hydro One said to keep at least 10 metres back, call 911 and notify Hydro One when coming across a downed wire.
The Hydro One has a feature on its website where you can plug your address into the map to report an outage or find more information about restoration.
