The 18-year-old suspect charged in a disturbing attack on his ex-girlfriend was in court Tuesday morning.

Philip Gagon Rivard appeared on video from the jail in North Bay. He is charged with attacking Kaylie Smith, 16, after she got off the bus in Cobalt around 6 p.m. Nov. 3.

Gagnon is accused of hitting her with his vehicle before attacking her with a sword and severing her left hand.

A fundraising campaign to help with her recovery has raised more than $110,000.

A recent update said Smith is "doing well in her recovery."

Gagnon is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapons possession and breaching his conditional sentence.

His case will return to court Dec. 10.
