Two people, including a 37-year-old Manitoulin Island man, are facing charges after an armed carjacking south of Sudbury last week.

Provincial police were called to Hendrie Township Road in the Nepewassi Lake area east of Estaire around 7 p.m. Nov. 27.

Two passengers were riding in the vehicle with the owner when one of them took out an edged weapon and told the driver to get out, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday.

"A struggle occurred and the owner was able to escape the incident without any injuries and contacted the police," OPP said.

The victim and the accused knew each other, OPP Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

Following an investigation, police arrested and charged a man from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory with assault, robbery and theft over $5,000.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for a second suspect, but no information has been provided about the individual.

"Sorry, but unless there is a safety concern to the public or a need for the public to know, the OPP does not release any information about a person with a warrant," Lewis said.

OPP is calling the incident an isolated event and said there are no public safety concerns.

The suspect was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 8 in Sudbury.
