Sudbury's Seedy Sunday returns to Science North

Organizers say they are putting the finishing touches on plans for what they are calling ‘the best Seedy Sunday in Sudbury ever.’

Science North’s Vale Cavern is for the second year hosting the volunteer-run event – with the science centre’s Ramsey Room also screening the film The Seeds of Vandana Shiva and hosting a seedy storytime.

Rachelle Rocha is one of the organizers of Seedy Sudbury. (Facebook/Seedy Sudbury)“The main attraction is the seed swap, so bring seeds you’ve saved,” said Rachelle Rocha, one of the event organizers in a news release.

“Even if you don’t have any to swap, come anyways.”

Rocha said that her main reason for being involved is to spread the word that Greater Sudbury is a good zone for growing food.

“We’re gathering to create excitement and confidence around seed saving and swapping,” she said.

“It’s a great place to make new connections, learn new skills, and to buy some interesting seeds adapted to our climate.”

Organizers said there will be lots of opportunities for newbies to learn more about seed swapping, including several “Seed Saving 101” sessions throughout the day with Peggy Baillie from Three Forks Seeds on Manitoulin Island.

The event will also feature several other speakers giving short talks on a variety of topics – including wildflower and culinary seed saving, growing and grafting fruit trees, medicinal plants, cooking with herbs and using milkweed.

The cavern will showcase a variety of vendors selling seeds produced in northern Ontario and related products along with a number of non-profits that will provide information and help with activities.

The family-friendly event will have children's activities as well – including looking at seeds under a microscope, tasting seeds and making seed packets.

While the event is free to attend, organizers are asking the public to register in advance so organizers can ensure activities run smoothly.

You can register online here.

If you can’t make it to the event in person, keep an eye on Seedy Sudbury’s social media pages on March 3 as parts of the event will be streamed live.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
