A 21-year-old northern Ontario man is charged with three counts of assault after police received a call about a suspect threatening and chasing people with a baseball bat last weekend.

Officers from the James Bay detachment responded to a disturbance on Mgr Proulx Avenue in Mattice shortly after 11 p.m. July 13, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Thursday.

The suspect, who is from the area, was gone when police arrived, but was located shortly after.

"The investigation involved three victims and police developed grounds for criminal charges," OPP said.

Const. Kyler Brouwer said the three victims were together outside in a public place when the incident occurred.

The accused is charged with three counts each of assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and having a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 14 in Hearst.

No word on whether the accused and victims are known to each other.
