Much of the focus in Sudbury municipal politics has so far been on the 11 candidates in the race for mayor, but there are 12 smaller races taking place across the city to elect new councillors.

If you think 11 candidates for mayor is a lot, there are 43 names on the ballot for council seats.

Sudbury is broken up into 12 wards, each electing one councillor.

There are six candidates alone are running in ward 11, where you'll find most of Minnow Lake and where the Kingsway Entertainment District will eventually be built.

Elsewhere, there are two candidates who have already been acclaimed: Ward 3 Councillor Gerry Montpellier and Michael Vagnini in Ward 2. Both councillors survived allegations of workplace harassment earlier this year

"There was a lot of sleepless nights through that whole investigation, so this is a nice end to it." said Vagnini.

But both will hold their seats for another term, in parts of town where resentment over the decades- old amalgamation still runs deep.

"There's still this whole big issue with the outside and the inside, and people are not happy about service levels." said Vagnini.

For another candidate in a different part of the city, one issue is electronic voting.

Geoff McCausland is running for the Ward 4 seat which includes the areas of the Donovan, Elm West, and Azilda.

"It could very easily be seen as a form of systemic discrimination." said McCausland.

He says people in his ward are the least likely to have smartphones or internet, preventing them from voting online, and on election day, they won't have a physical polling place to go to.

"The Flour Mill, Donovan is where most of our at-risk impoverished communities are and we have to make voting easiest for them if we want to have a real democracy." said McCausland.

Others point to a pretty staggering gender gap within the field of candidates.

Of the 43 people vying for a council seat, only seven are women. That's just 16% percent of the candidates. There's also just one woman running for mayor and only two of the current four female councillors are seeking re-election.

That has some worried that Sudbury's next government could be a real ‘boys club.’
