Anyone travelling along Highway 64 near Lavigne, Ont., should be on the lookout for bison crossing the road.

A news release Friday from the Ontario Provincial Police warned motorists that 50 bison escaped when a tree fell June 27, damaging a fence.

“About 50 bison began wandering off the secure property onto the highway and surrounding area,” police said.

A similar event took place in December 2021, when a fence was damaged during a winter storm. Eight bison escaped in that incident, but six were eventually recovered.
